Critics on the ââ¬Â Discourse on the Arts and Sciencesââ¬Â Free Essays
It can not be denied that with the development of science and technology, people live in a more comfortable way which they can never image one hundred years before. Sciences and arts change peopleââ¬â¢s thoughts and improve human culture. Some changes may be good, others may be not that delightful, but no matter how, we still go forward in the wave of science revolution. We will write a custom essay sample on Critics on the â⬠Discourse on the Arts and Sciencesâ⬠or any similar topic only for you Order Now What scientists do is all about human needs, not like Rousseau argued, which is only a result of pride and vanity. For example, do weà need cars, trains, planes? No, surly we can walk to anywhere by our own feet, no matter how long it takes or how dangerous it can be. Do we need phones? Of course not, I can yell from one mountain to the other trying to tell my mother I will get home later. Excuse for my sarcasm and please no offense, but I have to quote the criticism from Jules Lemaitre who thought the instant deification of Rousseau as ââ¬Ëone of the strangest proofs of humanââ¬â¢s stupidityââ¬â¢. Material abundance also brings some problems and the critical one is inequality which is the most important argument arised by Hippies. The conclusion they give is no more material, and we should all go back to primitive or so called as ââ¬Ënoble savageââ¬â¢. Obviously it is an unadvisable and unrealistic idea. Inequality can not be absolutely avoided whether we use forks or not. Once wolves work together for hunting, there is an Alfa as a leader who is the strongest one of the term and will get more food for its protection from enemies. Is that fair for other members gain less because they are born weaker? Should they just abandon eating for avoiding unwanted impurity? Above all, I canââ¬â¢t say agree to Rousseau for his attitude to sciences and ars. If there are any unfairness caused by sciences, what we should do is to creat more material wealth for everyone can afford luxury. There will be no inequality which is the same as primitive society, and the difference is ample material. How to cite Critics on the â⬠Discourse on the Arts and Sciencesâ⬠, Essay examples
Movie Summary Dr. Strangelove Essay Example For Students
Movie Summary Dr. Strangelove Essay The movie Dr. Strangelove is a satirical comedy, produced by Stanley Kubrick, made to make fun of the Cold War and how we were almost on the brink of destruction with the nuclear arms race. The movie portrays how gender roles are portrayed, stereotypical views of the time, and how deterrence would not work in a real life situation. Stereotypical views are made at Russians and how they act while the gender roles are portrayed more subtly by various characters and actions shown throughout the movie and the link between the movie and what was actually happening during the cold war. In the movie Dr. Strangelove the Russians in the film, Dimitri Kissov the Soviet Premier and Alexi de Sadesky the Soviet Ambassador, are portrayed as drunk communist spies trying to bring the destruction of the Americans. The Dunk notion comes to mind when Ambassador Alexi de Sadesky told President Merkin Muffley that the Soviet Premier is a person who likes to party as shown when the president initially starts the conversation he claims to have heard music laying in the background which shows that the premier was having a party in his office. The second way that Russians are portrayed as is communist spies. This was shown when General Buck Turgidson pulled a device used to take pictures of ââ¬Å"the big boardâ⬠in the war room. This was also shown later as the ambassador pulled another camera to take pictures successfully. The last way the Russians are stereotyped as people who love sex. This was shown as Ambassador Alexi de Sadesky said, ââ¬Å"I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor. â⬠to Dr. Strangeloveââ¬â¢s ratio of 10:1 female to male if they were to live underground. The gender role of men and women are shown as men being the strong ones while the women are treated as objects for procreation. Women are treated as objects of procreation when the scene of General Buck Turgidson about to have sex with Miss Scott before he had to go to the war room. The second scene where women are objectified as objects of sex is in the B-52 airplane as Major ââ¬Å"Kingâ⬠Kong was reading a playboy magazine labeled ââ¬Å"Foreign Affairsâ⬠over a womanââ¬â¢s butt. The last case where women are objectified as objects of sex is when Dr. Strangelove suggests that the mine shaft, filled with cobalt Thorium G, fit for a few thousand should be filled with a 10:1 ratio of women to men to ââ¬Å"ensure the populationâ⬠after the detonation of the Russiansââ¬â¢ Doomsday Device. Dr. Strangelove was filmed shortly after the Cuban Missile Crisis where America and Russia was close to a nuclear war. In the early 1960s, America started to obtain enough long range nuclear delivery devices to a huge advantage over Russia and by 1962, America had a 4:1 ratio advantage over the Russians in nuclear missiles. Nikita Khrushchev, the Russian Dictator, thought that President Kennedy was a weak leader that would not respond to the secret placement of missiles in Cuba that could reach most of the U. S.. Khrushchev wanted to humiliate America and address some of the problems in nuclear weapons without needing to build a large number of delivery devices. The U. S. discovered this plot, and soon after a suspenseful thirteen days, where the entire country seemed to hold its breath, made the Russians to agree to remove the missiles and take them back to Russia while the U. S. promised to take the missiles they owned out of Turkey. Even though the movie Dr. Strangelove was used to make fun of a scare in the 1960ââ¬â¢s there is evidence of the stereotypical view of the Russians and how they are drunk communist spies, gender roles of men and women, men being all powerful while women are treated as sex objects shown by Major ââ¬Å"Kingâ⬠Kong and General Buck Turgidson, and how the film related to several events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 and what could have led to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy as he was insulted by Nikita Khrushchev regarding the Cuban Missile Crisis and the nuclear arms race Russia and the United States were in.

Soccer Essays - Laws Of Association Football,
Soccer Soccer is a popular sport played all over the world. Even though it has only been popular in North America for the past 30 years, soccer has been a long time favorite most everywhere else. It is the national sport of most European and Latin-American countries, and of many other nations. Millions of people in more than 140 countries play soccer. The sport dates back to the Egyptians, who played games involving the kicking of a ball. Now, the sport has grown to a global pastime, including men's and women's teams, and the World Cup (which is played every four years). History and Origins Games similar to soccer were played in China as early as 400 BC. In about 200 AD the Romans played a game in which two teams tried to score by advancing a ball across a line on the field. The Romans passed the ball to one another but they never kicked it. London children in about 1100 played a form of soccer in the streets. During the 1800's the people of England played a game similar to soccer. Many rules changed and each person interpreted the rules differently. The modern version came about in the early nineteenth century, in England. It started as a game involving kicking and handing, but later this branched off into two separate sports: rugby and football (which is what the English call soccer). In 1848 a group of school representatives met at Trinity College in Cambridge and drew up the first of soccer rules. In 1863 English soccer clubs founded the Football Association. By the late 1800's soccer began to spread to the rest of the world. The Canadian Soccer Association was established in 1912 while the United States Soccer Federation was set up in 1913. The first World Cup Championship was in Montevideo, Uruguay. Since then it has been played every four years except during WWII. The North American Soccer League (NASL) was formed in 1968 and the sport began to gain popularity in the 1970's. Modern Game and Rules The modern game of soccer has a simple goal: kick or head the ball in to the goal of your opponent's team. Basically, there is also one simple rule: No one except the goalkeeper may use they're hands to play the ball. Soccer is a simplistic sport. Eleven members of each team defend their side of the field to prevent the ball from being forced into their goal, which results in a point scored by the team kicking the ball. There are only three officials involved during play: The referee, and two linesmen. The equipment used in soccer is also very simple. In addition to the field itself, all that is needed for a game is two goals (eight feet high and eight yards apart) and a ball. Each player wears hard plastic or padded shin guard, covered by long socks, for protection during play. Cleats are also worn for traction on the field. A goalie may also wear a special padded shirt, and gloves to protect his or her hands. A standard field, as regulated by the Federation International de Football Association (or FIFA), has a length between 100 and 130 yards, and a width of between 50 and 100 yards. The rules of play for soccer have deliberately been kept simple (see rules as appendix). The referee makes most of the decisions, and attempts to encourage fair play. A soccer game begins with a kickoff in the center of the field. A coin is flipped to decide which team will kickoff. The other team kicks off at the start of the second half when the teams switch sides or nets. After a team scores the other team gets to kickoff to begin again. The kickoff takes place in the middle of the field. When the ball is kicked it must travel the circumference of the ball and touch another player before the kicker can touch the ball again. After the ball is in play it remains in play unless it crosses a goal line or a touchline. All players attempt to stop the ball from coming in their zone while at the same time trying to score a goal. A player may kick the ball into the net with any part of the body except the hands and arms. If the ball goes out of bounds the play is restarted with a corner kick, a goal kick, or a throw-in. The referee decides what type to use. If the ball crosses

In the movie Scream, the evil character is a man who is dressed in a long black robe and wears an elongated white mask over his face. He is very plain and simple which creates more suspense because no one knows who he is. This evil character calls his targeted victims over the phone. Many times, victims t hink someone is making a prank call. For example, the movie opens when Casey (Drew Barrymore) receives a call from an unidentified caller. As his voice is becoming more threatening, she starts to realize that he is not only talking to her on the phone, but he is also watching her. After he calls and harasses his targeted victims over the phone, he appears in the same house and chases down his victims until he is able to successfully murder them. No one knows the killers identity and it creates a sense of wonder. His deep, threatening voice helps to make his plain and simple costume even scarier for the viewers. All scary movies have to have the element of death. The murders committed in the movie made it one of the scariest movies of its time. After killing his teenage victims, he usually leaves their mutilated bodies in odd places or positions. For example, after killing Caseys boyfriend, the killer chases her into the yard. Her parents do not see her, so after the killer stabs her in the chest, he then hangs her dead body in the tree for her parents to see her. So, not only are the murders gruesome, they are also very disturbing. By chasing his victims, he creates suspense and excitement for the viewers. There were several sound effects throughout the movie, that created fear and suspense for the viewers. For example, the voice of the killer over the phone created a scary feeling; it was deep and mysterious, harsh and threatening. The use of music was also very well developed. It helped to excite the viewers and create a sense of fear.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! On the other hand, sometimes the victims cannot scream because of the way the killer stabs them. The inability to scream created an element of fear because this made the k iller powerful. This movie was very well-written, directed and executed for the horror audience. The director was able to grab the viewers attention and hold it throughout the entire film. He created a sense of fear which is what a successful horror film about. When the film ended, it was very clear that there would be a sequel soon. By using an undefined ending, the director was able to convince the viewers to come back and see the next part. Therefore, with these three main elements of a horror film, Scream was very successful.

Industry Analysis - Application to the Oil Industry Case Study
Industry Analysis - Application to the Oil Industry - Case Study Example Suppliers play an imperative role in the success of any business. As such, a supplier may affect the profitability of a company either positively, by boosting it or negatively, by reducing it. This is what forms the power of suppliers. A supplier has powers to determine the profitability of a company, and in the case of the oil industry, the suppliers of BP can either assist it to become more prosperous and productive or to lose their market and make losses. This stems from the fact that suppliers agree to supply their products to the company at a certain given market price. If they increase the price at which they sell their products to the company, this will reduce the profit margin of BP, and the lack of alternative suppliers, as well as the strong power of the suppliers will bring the profitability of the company down. On the other hand, these suppliers can equally boost the profitability of the company by supplying it with product at a low cost, thereby increasing the companyâ⠬â¢s profit margin and hence boost its profit levels. As such, it is imperative for BP to make the right choices of suppliers in order to secure a significant profit margin. BP sells its products to a wide range of customers. These people bring profit to it by purchasing its petroleum products. Its major customers include airline companies, governments, as well as ordinary motorists and companies. The bargaining power of these buyers is not as strong enough as to influence the selling price as set by BP. BP has sales points in many regions across the world, bearing the fact that it is a global multinational, and it has control over its buyers in almost all of its markets. It is only in some minor occasions where the governments within the markets in which it operates step in to regulate the fuel prices in the country generally, thereby also setting the price limits for the petroleum products sold by BP. However, this only strengthens the bargaining power of these customers to a considerable level, not strong enough to affect the profitability of the company

Peter ducker Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Peter ducker - Essay Example Management can survive only through superior competence and continually improving performance. Drucker has emphasized the importance of role of management not only in business but also on political state of affairs of many countries. He asserted that only management can help most of the countries to come out of their economic and/or political struggle and build their economies. Druckerââ¬â¢s seven key elements, as described by Hutton and Holbeche, (Drucker, 2007a) that influenced organisational thinking and practice to a large extent include, scientific management as the key to productivity; decentralization as the basic principle of organisation; personnel management as the orderly way of fitting people into organisation structures; manager development to provide for needs of tomorrow; managerial accounting for use of analysis and information as the foundation for firm decision-making; marketing; and long-range planning (Drucker, 2007b). Druckerââ¬â¢s philosophy of management was based on five basic principles: setting objectives, organising, motivating and communicating, establishing measurements of performance, and developing people and self. Drucker refers to these principles as managerââ¬â¢s responsibilities. However, some of these principles have been criticized by others. For example, Parkinson argued that some of Druckerââ¬â¢s principles are vague and others are still to be defined. He also felt that Druckerââ¬â¢s ignorance of a specific issue/problem seems greater than his knowledge. Some of leading management theories of the 20th century contributed by Drucker include, management by objectives; putting the customer first; the role of chief executive in corporate strategy, and structure follows strategy. Drucker proposed the theory of the business, in which he contended the fact that businesses are run on a
